Obituary

Janet Elizabeth (Dayton) Snow was born in Washington, Indiana, on Friday, September 13, 1946, to Albert N. and Mary H. Dayton, the second of four children.

She was educated in the St. Simon Grade School and the Washington Catholic High School. Janet attended Vincennes University and then Indiana State University, graduating in 1968 with a degree in elementary education. She taught first and second grades for nine years, including years at St. Mary's Grade School and St. Simon's Grade School in Washington, Indiana, as well as schools on various Army posts.

In June 1969, she married John T. Snow. Janet accompanied John as he served in the United States Army. They lived at Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey; Ft. Gordon, Georgia; and Ft. Greely in Alaska, just to name a few of the locations to which the Army sent them. After finishing up their Army time at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, Janet and John settled in West Lafayette, Indiana, where John pursued graduate study and ultimately a faculty position at Purdue University. After a few years as a retail store manager, Janet joined Purdue National Bank as a teller, ultimately becoming a bank officer and Manager of Branch Administration.

In 1988, Janet accompanied John on a sabbatical to far southwestern France. Janet enjoyed living in the Pyrenees and learning the French language from the local people. Returning from France, Janet decided to shift her focus to home renovations, landscaping and gardening, and traveling with John. In 1990-91, Janet again found herself an Army wife as John served overseas in the Gulf War.
In 1993, John accepted an offer to be a dean at the University of Oklahoma. Janet picked a home in Norman, Oklahoma, a home that, during the next two decades, she extensively renovated and completely redid its landscaping. Along the way, she became a Master Gardner, a title bestowed by the Oklahoma State Soil Conservation Service after hands-on work with Oklahoma soils and plants. Janet was also very active in the University Women's Association, serving as a Treasurer and later as President. She was the long-time Treasurer of the UWA's Investment Club.

In late October 2014, Janet fell down an unmarked stairway in a hotel in Dallas, Texas. She suffered a broken neck and a severe concussion. She lived the next 8+ years as a quadriplegic. Janet passed away Christmas morning 2022.

Her older brother, James W., having passed away in 1990, Janet is survived by her husband, John T. Snow; her brother, John A. (Rebecca); her sister, Mary A. (Richard) Cohen; and many nieces and nephews that she adored.
