Obituary

Josephine (Downey) Grannan, 105, passed away peacefully at 1:30 p.m. Sunday following a two month illness. She was born May 11, 1906, on a farm a mile east of Montgomery. She was the third of four children born to Thomas and Stella Margaret "May" (Schultz) Downey. She graduated from Montgomery High School in 1923. Following her graduation, she was a teller at the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Montgomery for six years until her marriage on June 22, 1929, to Apollinaris L. Grannan, a World War I veteran. Following their marriage, they lived in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area for five years where she was a teller at the Newport National Bank, Newport, Ky. In 1934 they returned to Montgomery where they lived for the remainder of their married life. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary the year before he passed away on March 29, 1985. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Walter Downey, and her sisters, Agnes Cunningham and Margaret Downey. She was a member of Mary, Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fairborn, Ohio, as well as St. Peter's Catholic Church, Montgomery, where she was baptized,married, and where she worshiped for many years. She was named Mother of the Year for St. Peter's Church in 1990. She received an Honorary Life Membership in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She had a deep, abiding faith that was a inspiration to all who knew her. She was a kind, caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She leaves the following family members to cherish her memory: her children and their spouses, Ralph and Patricia Grannan of Riverside, Calif., Marvin and Dorothea (Grannan) Meade of Fairborn, and Eugene "Gene" and Peggy Grannan of Corydon; her grandchildren and spouses, Alan and Dorothy "Dottie" Meade of Fairborn, Mark and Thersa (Meade) Gooding of Beavercreek, Ohio, Eric and Holly Grannan of New York City, N.Y., Michael and Andrea (Grannan) Ware of Santa Monica, Calif., Jason and Sabrina (Grannan) Feldman of Pasadena, Calif., Aaron and Linda Grannan of Helena, Ala., and Lesli Anne Grannan of Kettering, Ohio; ten great-grandchildren, Kelley, Evette and Mallory Meade, Alicia and Kyle Gooding, Matthew, Emma and Patrick Ware, and Alexandra and Edward Feldman. Visitation will be held at Ed Lee Mortuary from 5 p.m.to 9 p.m. Friday. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Churh, Montgomery at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.
