Obituary

Eugene Louis Fields, age 85, of Washington, formerly of Lansing, Il, passed away at 8:15 PM on Sunday at Emerald House. He was born on March 23, 1925 in Daviess County to Charles 'Sidney' and Clara (Wilson) Fields. He was educated in St. Joseph School in Jasper in grades 1st through 8th grades, and attended Alfordsville High School. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, in which he served on the USS Heermann ( DD532), a Fletcher Class Destroyer, receiving a Presidential Unit Citation for action in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He was retired after 30 years of work from Great Lake Towing Company as a Chief Engineer. He is survived by two sons, Lawrence Fields of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Ronald Fields; one sister Justina Duncheon of Evansville; and two step grandchildren, Lauren Taylor and Chris McNair. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Jane (Powell) Fields, whom he married on November 15, 1953, and his brothers Sydney, Bernard, and Joseph, and sisters Ellen Lundy and Mary Ruth Colvin A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Gordon Mann as celebrant. Burial will follow in St Patrick Cemetery in Corning with military graveside rites by the Washington American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM on Wednesday and 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Thursday at Ed Lee Mortuary. Condolences may be sent online at www.edleemortuary.com
