Obituary

Mariah Suzanne Litwiler, 46, of Washington, Indiana, passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 6, 2024. She was born on February 16, 1978, in Bedford, Indiana, to Roy and Betty (Ward) Litwiler.

Mariah was a lifelong Cardinal, attending Washington Catholic Schools, K-12, and graduating in 1999. She worked as a library aide in the Washington Catholic Elementary School, for fifteen years, checking out the students' library books, chatting with them, making them packets and gift bags for special occasions and often helping out in the classrooms (unless she was working on her Ring-A-Word puzzles).

In her free time, Mariah enjoyed coloring, journaling, playing games, especially card games and Yahtzee. She loved listening to music, her favorite being Christian music, the musical Annie and any songs her siblings played at Mass. But, her most favorite activity was gambling. Mariah loved to play bingo and did so regularly, making bingo a staple in her weekly schedule. Going to the casino with her family and playing the slot machines, followed by getting a Blizzard from the Dairy Queen was a much enjoyed weekend family outing. Her squeal of excitement when she won was a delight to hear. Mariah loved bingo so much that one of her senior pictures featured her holding a dauber!

The most important things to Mariah were her faith and her family. She never missed an opportunity to pray for someone, to call them just to check on them, or to send them a text, Facebook message, or a short letter. She was a lifelong member of St. Simon/Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. Mariah attended Masses weekly and was involved with Christ Renews His Parish. She had a special devotion to Jesus, Our Lady, and Saint Therese of Lisieux, whose "Little Way" was Mariah's way. She was always praying for others and reaching out to her friends, who WERE her family. Being godmother to her godson Michael was a joy to her, but being an aunt to her niece Lucy was her reason for living.

Mariah became involved in the Teens Encounter Christ movement, making TEC 49 in 2003 and working several teams since. When her health would not allow her to continue attending the retreats, she would show up to support the movement through prayers, writing letters, and TEC Reunion events. She had a servant's heart, always giving of her time, money, and prayers. Mariah was always thinking of others before herself. She was shocked and proud to receive the Spirit of TEC Award in 2008 and the Brute Society distinction for the Diocese of Evansville in 2015.

To know Mariah was to love her - her smile, her laugh, her caring nature and her sincere heart will be greatly missed.

Mariah is survived by her parents, Roy and Betty Litwiler of Washington; her sisters: Heidi (Jacob) Deckard of Odon, and Laura Litwiler of Washington; her brother, Roy Litwiler, Jr. of Jasper; and her niece, Lucy Deckard. She leaves numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins whom she loved so dearly, as well as many friends who will greatly mourn her passing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Washington Catholic Education Endowment Fund.
