Obituary for Penelope Rae "Penny" (Sipes) Toy
Penelope Rae "Penny" (Sipes) Toy, 62, of Loogootee, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023, after a long, hard-fought battle against pancreatic cancer. She was born on February 5, 1961, in Daviess County, Indiana, to Marilyn J. (Baker) Beemblossom and Albert C. Sipes. Growing up, Penny shared the spotlight with her siblings Albert "Lee" and Tammy.
Penny called Martin County, Indiana, her home for the majority of her life. She was a 1979 graduate of Shoals High School and took great pride in being a Jug Rock. She married the love of her life, Robert D. "Bob" Toy, in 1983. Bob and Penny lived in Greensburg, Indiana, and Vincennes, Indiana, before settling in Loogootee, Indiana, where she and Bob raised their children, Jordan Christopher and Alayna Brianne.
While raising kids and supporting Bob with his business, Penny found the time to be an active member of her community. She endeavored to support her kids in all of their pursuits. She was passionate about helping others and serving the community, participating in the LHS Band and Choir Boosters, volunteering at St. Vincent DePaul, and playing an active role in local food pantries. Penny was once described as someone who was "always in action and had the most perfect hair and makeup." She loved to lend a helping hand and was often the first one to show up at someone's house with her famous baked spaghetti when they needed support.
Penny loved her family, both those by relation, and those who she adopted along the way. Known as "Mama Toy" or "Nana" to many, she served as a consistent presence and cheerleader for many. Her cousin and longtime friend described her saying, "Penny told it like was. She loved big and bold and was fiercely protective." Penny longed for the day when she would have grandchildren. The timing didn't quite work out, so she settled for her grand-dogs, Jasper, Dixie, and Atticus. She was a pet lover and self-proclaimed cat-lady. She leaves behind her treasured cat, Parker, who will undoubtedly miss her love and affection, like so many others.
Throughout her life, Penny followed her creative passions including, baking, cake decorating, wreath making, and floral arrangement. Aside from talking on the phone, her favorite pastime was her love for finding a good deal at the local thrift store - especially if she could find something owl themed.
Penny is preceded in death by her father, Albert C. Sipes; mother-and father-in-law, Robert and Virginia (Williams) Toy; sister-in-law, Roberta (Toy) Williams; brother-in-law, Gary Williams, and dear friend, Bonita Ragsdale.
Left to cherish memories of Penny include her beloved husband of thirty-nine years, Bob of Loogootee; her son, Jordan Toy (husband, Alexander Frederick) of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania; daughter, Alayna (Toy) Spicer (husband, Sterling) of Lawson, Missouri; mother, Marilyn (Baker) Beemblossom; brother, Albert "Lee" Sipes; and sister, Tammy (Sipes) Wininger. all of Shoals, Indiana. Additionally, she is survived by many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and the many loving friends who brought joy to her life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Very Reverend J. Kenneth Walker, at 10:00 am, Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Loogootee. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery in Loogootee.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 4, 2023, from 2:00-8:00 pm, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Loogootee, Indiana.
