Obituary
James "Vernon" Mattingly, 77, passed away at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville, Friday, September 3, 2021. James was born on July 3, 1944, to Inez (Borders) Mattingly and Walter Mattingly. On November 30, 1963, he married Linda (Helm) Mattingly; she passed away five days earlier on August 29, 2021.
During his working years, Vernon was a farmer, employed at McCords Corporation, Triple-T Trucking, Siler Oil, Myers Farms, and Quest Liner Trucking. He loved farming, gardening, fishing, hunting, and never tired of watching his two favorite movies: Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. He was an avid fan of Indiana University basketball and Big 10 Conference Basketball.
Vernon was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. Known to be a generous man, he would give his last dollar to anyone in need. Over his many years of gardening, he never failed to share his bounty with family, friends, and Feed My Sheep. Vernon was of the Catholic faith and a member of St. Simon Church.
Those who now cherish Vernon's memory include: his children, Michelle (David) McCord of Washington, Jennifer (Bob) Sullivan of Emison, and Ryan Mattingly of Washington. James leaves four beloved grandchildren: Rachel Schell, Tosha Webster, Braydon Sullivan, and Haley Sullivan; and two great-grandchildren: Gracie Jones and Riverleigh Sullivan. Additionally, he leaves a sister, Sue (Mattingly) Lee.
During his lifetime, Vernon mourned the loss of his parents, Inez and Walter Mattingly; his wife, Linda (Helm) Mattingly; brothers, William "Bud" Mattingly, Tom Mattingly, Robert "Porky" Mattingly, and Louis "Eddie" Mattingly, Ira "Archie" Mattingly, Daniel C. Mattingly, and Joey Mattingly; and his beloved granddaughter, Madeline "Maddie" Webster.
Visitation for Vernon Mattingly is set for Saturday, September 11, 2021, 8:30 - 10:00 am, at the Ed L. Lee Mortuary, North Chapel, 620 East Viola Avenue, Washington, Indiana.
Vernon's funeral will immediately follow the visitation on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at 10:00 am. Pastor Debbie Payne will officiate. Pastor Payne will be assisted by Yvonne Evans.
A private interment service is planned.
