Obituary

Carl Burris, 96, passed away Friday, August 13, 2021, while at the Daviess Community Hospital. Carl was born March 1, 1925, in Washington to Nora Belle (Akers) and Charles Burris.
Carl was 1943 graduate of Washington High School, and a graduate of Butler University. He was a World War II veteran who served honorably in the United States Army Air Corp. Carl received numerous citations for outstanding service to his country, including the American Theater Ribbon; Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars; a Good Conduct Medal; Distinguished Unit Badge; and the WW II Victory Medal. He served in Saipan in the Western Pacific.
Carl was the first pharmacist hired by the Daviess Community Hospital. He worked there thirty-seven years. In retirement, he loved traveling; bicycling; dancing; cards and card games; coin and stamp collecting; and genealogy. An avid sports fan, Carl also found time to coach Little League and was a baseball umpire at the high school level. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the B-29 Saipan 73 Wing Group 1944/45. He will be forever remembered as THE chocolate chip cookie baker. There are many who remember and miss his famous cookie deliveries.
Those who now cherish Carl's memories include: his special friend of forty-six years, Judy Pruett; and his children, Stephen (Lorraine) Burris of Terre Haute; Michael Burris of Marengo; David (Rachel) Burris of Sellersburg; Christopher Burris, Philip Burris, and Mary Beth (Ronald) Streete all of Washington. Coming from a large family, Carl had several brothers and sisters: Randy (Sandy) Burris, Glenn Burris, Doris Loyd all of Washington; Joseph Burris of Daytona Beach, Florida; Carolyn Sue Brooks of Fountain City; Sharon (Gary) Garabrant of Brownsburg; and Norma Mercker of Dublin, Ohio. Carl also leaves behind twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
During his life, Carl mourned the loss of his parents, Nora Belle and Charles Burris; brothers, Harold Burris, Ray Burris, James L. Burris, Charles "Junior" Burris, and Gilbert Burris; and daughter-in-law, Peggy Burris, wife of Michael Burris.
For those wishing to make a donation in Carl's memory, the family suggests the Honor Flight Network, as Carl was a member of the EVV-3 Honor Flight. This is a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting as many military veterans as possible to visit the war memorials in Washington, DC at no cost to them. Visitation for Carl L. Burris will be Wednesday, August 18, 2021, 5:00-8:00 pm, at the Ed Lee Mortuary, North Chapel, 620 East Viola Avenue, Washington.
Funeral services for Carl L. Burris will be held Thursday, August 19, 2021, 11:00 am, at the Ed Lee Mortuary, North Chapel, 620 East Viola Avenue, Washington. Pastor Steve Dayton will officiate. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery, Washington.
