Obituary

Margaret Judith Hebert (O’Neill), age 85 passed away with her son holding her hand on November 30, 2020 at his home overlooking Bennet Valley in Sonoma County, California after a courageous battle with endometrial cancer. She is survived by her son Colin Hebert, daughter-in-law Jennifer Hebert and granddaughter Audrey Hebert of Santa Rosa, California. She is also survived by her four sisters with whom she remained close to her whole life - Patty Niehaus of Vincennes, Indiana, Elizabeth DePalma of Lake Wylie, South Carolina, Katherine ‘Kay’ Heffernan of Washington, Indiana and Barbara McGaughey of Vincennes, Indiana.


 Margaret, known as Peggy was born on October 26, 1935 in Washington, Indiana to Francis Gregory O’Neill and Hester Margaret O’Neill. She graduated from Washington Catholic High School in 1953, and received a BS in education from Indiana University in 1957. Peggy was a member of the Delta Theta Tau sorority.


Peggy took a train out West to sunny Southern California to begin her teaching career after hearing a San Diego School District recruiter during a freezing Indiana Winter.


She returned to Indiana during the summers to take classes driving up to Bloomington with her mother and sister Patty. All three of them completed their Masters in Teaching at Indiana University.


 In 1970 Peggy married Yves A. Hebert and moved to Olivenhain in San Diego County.


Peggy later moved to Rancho Bernardo, California (1983) where she was a member of the San Rafael Parish for nearly 40 years. She had many friends and was active in San Rafael’s Women’s Fellowship, Belles for Bridge Group, Morning Mahjong, The Bunco Squadron and was a founding member of San Rafael’s Evening Book Group.   Peggy was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She liked Greek Mythology and passed her interest down to her granddaughter Audrey. She also enjoyed English Mysteries, Martinis and swimming every morning.


She will be remembered for her amazing strength, loyal friendships and incredible love for her family.


A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Wednesday December 9, 2020 at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Paul Ferguson as celebrant.  Burial will follow in St John Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
