Obituary

Dr. James W. Barrett, MD age 90 of Washington passed away at 12:30 a.m. Monday at his residence. He was born on January 10, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York to George and Ida (McCarthy) Barrett. He was a 1934 graduate of Xavier High School in New York City. He graduated from Seton Hall University in 1938, graduated from State University of New York Long Island Medical School in 1943. He was a World War II Veteran, were he was a Lieutenant J.G. in the US Navy Atlantic Theatre as a Fleet Surgeon in 1945. In 1946 he was transferred to the US Marine Corp. serving as First Lieutenant in China in the First Marine Division Guadalcanal. After being discharged from the Marine Corp. he practiced medicine and surgery in Essex County, New Jersey until coming to Washington in 1963. Here in Washington he went into private practice as a Surgeon until his retirement in 1985. Also he had served as Chief of Surgery at Daviess Community Hospital for several years. Dr. Barrett married his loving sweetheart, Margaret Mary 'Willie' Willette on April 12, 1945 and they spent 52 wonderful years together before her death on November 17, 1998. Surviving are two sons and daughters in-law, Christopher Barrett of Huntsville, Alabama, James W. Jr. and Molly Barrett of St. Louis, MO., and Kim Williams Barrett of St. Louis, Mo.; one daughter and son in-law, Amy and Terence Fee of Clarendon Hills, Il.; six grandchildren, Katherine Beimdiek of St. Louis, Mo., Susan Bowen of St. Louis, Mo., Lucy Barrett of Lexington, Ky., Caitlin Fee of Clarendon Hills, Il., Samuel Barrett of St. Louis, Mo., and Jennifer Barrett of St. Louis, Mo.; and four great grandchildren. Preceded him in death, besides his wife, was one son Peter Barrett on May 27, 2005 and one brother, George Barrett. Dr. Barrett was lovingly cared for by three very special ladies, Arlene Harker, Betty Adams, and Norma Ketchum and a special gentleman, Dennis Sidebottom. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 AM at St Simon Catholic Church with Father Gordon Mann as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 to 8 PM at St. Simon Catholic Church with a Christian Wake service at 4:00 PM. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Helping Hearts Hospice.
