Obituary

John A. McCall, age 86, of Plainville passed away at 9:35 a.m. Sunday at Ketcham Memorial Center in Odon. Born September 17, 1923 in Daviess County he was the son of John Austin and Tillie Pearl (Taylor) McCall. He was a 1941 graduate of Epsom High School and attended Purdue University. He was a member of the Cornettsville United Methodist Church, and a leader in the Epsom UM Church. He was a well-known, successful, and progressive farmer in the Epsom Community retiring in 1985. He was awarded the "Sagamore of the Wabash" award. He was active in the Daviess County Soil and Water Conservation district for fifty-two years and a member of the Indiana Farmers Union and RC&D. He was an active supporter of the North Daviess School system serving as an official scorer for the Junior High Boys Basketball program for 13 years. He loved classical and opera music and supported North Daviess music programs and boosters. He established the McCall Family Teacher's Scholarship, which continues to provide support to North Daviess graduates studying for a career in education. He was a great encouragement to others and had a strong faith in God and loved sharing that faith. He often said, "It's a great day to be alive in the Lord Jesus Christ!" and so he is today. Surviving is his wife, Ann Marie (Lashley) McCall, whom he married September 17, 1945; five daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Ava McCall and David Calabria of Oshkosh Wisconsin, Charlotte and Gene Irvine and Mary and Tom Majerus all of Marietta, Ga., Andrea and Larry Lynch of Tyler, Tx, and Nancy and Brian Stuffle of Plainville; grandchildren, Michael (Jessica) Carroll of Cartersville, Ga, Brandon Majerus of Gainesville, Ga, Natalie (Billy) Gainey of Trenton, Fl; Leo and Lucas Lynch of Tyler, Tx, and Drew, Cory, and Alex Stuffle of Plainville; and two great-grandchildren, Samuel Carroll and Lydia Gainey. He is preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be at 12 noon Thursday at the Cornettsville United Methodist Church with Pastor Bill Talbot officiating. Burial will follow in the New Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ed Lee Mortuary and 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the church.
