Obituary

Thomas E. Hughes, 95 of Montgomery Indiana, passed away at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, December 16th at Select Specialty in Evansville. He was born September 17, 1917 in Daviess County to John T. and Rose (Conlin) Hughes. He married Stella Rose Wilson on May 13, 1946 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Evansville, Indiana . Tom served in the United States Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He belonged to the 27th Divisions famous "Fighting Iris" regiment, Conquerous of Makin and Veterans of Siapan, and earned The Combat Infantryman"s Badge, for exemplary conduct in battle. He was also a Purple Heart recipient. He retired from Crane Navel Ammunition Depot in 1982.Following his retirement from Crane he worked an additional twenty-seven years at Farmer's Storage of Montgomery until the age of ninety-two. He was also a member of the St. Peter Catholic Church in Montgomery, Washington American Legion, VFW, and the Washington Moose. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Stella Hughes and his five children: Martha Jean(Harley) Burkhart, of Washington, Linda (Mark) Strange of Montgomery, Denny (Jane) Hughes of Kentucky, Theresa (Galen) Yoder of Montgomery, and Peggy(Tim) Hogan of Bloomington; fifteen grandchildren ; twenty-three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth(Joe) Fitzgerald of Indianapolis . He was preceded in death by seven siblings: Alvin Hughes, Paul Hughes, James Hughes, Bridget Kearby, Ray Hughes, Mary Hughes and Helen Phipps. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Montgomery with Father James Koressel as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Washington American Legion and V.F.W. Visitation in from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church. Ed Lee Mortuary is handling the arrangements. Ed Lee Mortuary Washington, Indiana
