Obituary

Fred Walker Jr. age 69 of Washington passed away on Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes. He was born in Loogootee on November 13, 1937 to Eleanor (McAtee) and Frederic Joseph Walker Sr. He was a 1955 graduate of St. John's High School in Loogootee, a 1957 of Vincennes University with an Associate in Science Degree, a 1959 graduate of Indiana University 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a 1969 graduate of Indiana University with a Master Arts Degree. He taught at Washington Catholic High School from 1960 to 1964. In 1964 he went on to become Professor of Journalism and Director of the Journalism Program at Vincennes University serving the University until retiring as a Full Professor in 1996. He received the Blue and Gold Cord Award from Vincennes University in 1969, National Distinguished Junior College Newspaper Adviser of the Year Award in 1969, Outstanding Alumni Award from the Loogootee Schools Alumni Association in 1984, Big Apple Award from Vincennes University in 1990, Vincennes University's Exemplary Service Award in 1992, inducted into the National Community College Journalism Hall of Fame in 1994, SAGAMORE OF THE WABASH was presented to him by Governor Evan Bayh, in 1996, Elihu Stout Plaque for Distinguished Achievement in Journalism in 1996, inducted into the Brute Society of the Catholic Diocese of Evansville in 1997. On July 30, 1996, the then president of Vincennes University, Dr. Phillip M. Summers, dedicated the Vincennes University Journalism Laboratory as THE FRED WALKER JR. JOURNALISM LABORATORY. His most recent achievement was being elected to the 2007 Class of the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame. Surviving are his mother; Eleanor Walker of Washington; two sisters and brothers-in-law; Barbara (Walker) and John Leriche of Aloha, Oregon and M. Jane (Walker) and Robert Groves of Bloomfield; three nephews, Steven Leriche and Jeff Leriche of Oregon and Brad Groves of Bloomington; two nieces, Kristian Hickey of Oregon and Stacey Groves of Terre Haute; and five great nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his father, Fred Walker, Sr. in 1978. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Wednesday at St. Simon Catholic with Father Gordon Mann as celebrant. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 4 to 8 PM at Ed Lee Mortuary with a wake service at 4 PM.
