Robert Louis Spalding, 66, passed away October 10, 2023. He was born in Jasper on May 25, 1957, to Delbert L. and Vera Louise (Moore) Spalding. He married Susan Kay Mattingly on October 12, 1985 and together, they created a loving home for their children.
A graduate of Washington High School, Robert was a union laborer who was most recently employed at Wabash Steel in Vincennes where he was a welder. He was a five-year member of the Brothers Railway Carmen, a thirty-three-year member of the Laborers Union 561, and a seven-year member of the Iron Workers Union.
Robert loved watching sports, especially baseball. He also enjoyed college and professional football, and did a lot of fishing in his younger days. Robert was a loving husband and father who loved being with his children, three grandchildren, coworkers, and friends. Robert was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.
Those who now mourn Robert's passing include his wife, Susan Kay Spalding; his children: Chad Mattingly; Crystal L. (Jonathan Waggoner) Spalding; and Hillary S. Spalding all of Washington. He was blessed with three grandchildren: Jonathan Waggoner, Robert Waggoner, and Suzanne Waggoner. Additionally, he leaves a cousin, Alicia Riester of Washington.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Vera Louise and Delbert L. Spalding, and a Baby Spalding, who died in infancy.
