Obituary

Judith Hayes Dwyer, age 75, of Washington, died peacefully at 5:55 PM on Saturday, June 28th, 2014 at her home. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 3rd at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Gordon Mann as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery. Friends may call at Our Lady of Hope Church from 8:30 AM till 10:45 AM on Thursday, July 3rd, 2014. She was born on November 27, 1938 in Washington, Indiana to Jack E. Hayes and Helen Dougherty Hayes. She married James Donald Dwyer on September 8, 1962 at St. Simon Catholic Church. He died on August 12, 2000. She was a member of St. Simon Catholic Church (which became Our Lady of Hope). She was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa from 1956 to the present. She served as President of both the Beta Zeta Washington Associate Chapters. She was a member of Daviess Count Republican Women. She graduated from Washington Catholic High School in 1956, Marquette University in 1960, and Indiana School of Law at Bloomington in 1963. She served as Deputy Prosecuting Attorney from 1966-1974 and (was presiding) Judge of the Daviess County Court from 1976-1987. At that time, she was the fourth woman to serve as Judge in Indiana. She became a (appointed) Judge of the Daviess Court Superior Court in 1988 and served until 2002. She was also a member of the Board of Governors of the Daviess County Hospital from 1967-1975 and the Daviess County United Way from 1989-1996. She is survived by her five children; Julie D.B. Martin of Bloomington, Indiana, Patrick H. Dwyer of Washington, Indiana, Brendan H. Dwyer of Indianapolis, Indiana, Jennifer B. Dwyer of Strasburg, Virginia, and Michael D. Dwyer of Vincennes, Indiana; one brother, Jeffrey E. Hayes, and nine grandchildren. The family requests that in lieu of flowers remembrances be made to the Jack E. Hayes Catholic Education Endowment Fund of The Daviess County Community Foundation 320 East Main Street-Washington, Indiana 47501; or The Daviess County Museum 212 East Main Street-Washington, Indiana 47501.
