Eugene L. James, age 80, of Washington, passed away at 10:15 a.m. Monday at Daviess Community Hospital. He was born on June 14, 1932 in Washington to Jesse H. and Helen Rose (Burkhardt) James. He was a 1951 graduate of Washington Catholic High School. He attended Vincennes University and Purdue University. He retired from the Indiana Department of Transportation Vincennes District in 1994. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, 4TH Degree Knights of Columbus, Washington American Legion, and Washington Boat Club. He enjoyed fishing, camping and gardening and loved sharing his joy of his gifts with his family. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Bradley) James whom he married on May 9, 1959; two daughters and sons in-law, Tammy and Kevin Myers, and Cathy and Arlen Winkler all of Washington; three sons and daughters in-law, Michael and Donna James of Montgomery, Jim and Danielle James od Australia, and Jeff and Jesse James of Washington; ten grandchildren, Quintin Myers, Allyssa Myers, Jordan Winkler, Garrett Winkler, Lauren Winkler, Kacie James, Logan James, Elizabeth James, Henry James, and Indiana James; and one sister, Norma Ketchem of Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Eleanor Burris, Mary Emma Uhl, and Sister Mary Harold; and four brothers, Robert James, William James, Harold James and Father Edward James. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Friday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Montgomery with father James Koressel as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery in Washington with Military graveside rites by the Washington American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 PM on Thursday with a wake service at 8 PM at St. Peter Catholic Church. Memorial donations may be sent to the Washington Boat Club.
