He was born May 9, 1917 in Washington to Fredrick R. and Kathryn (Sahm) Massie. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He started working for A. J. Raney at Raney Shoe Store in 1938, became manager in 1951, and in 1964 became owner and remained owner until 2000. He was an avid fisherman. He is survived by two daughters and sons in-law, Beverly and Donald Brown of Washington, and Peggy and Robert Ryan of Pennyville; three sons and daughters in-law, Michael D. and Sheila Massie of Bloomington, Bernard C. Massie, and Anthony and Helen Massie all of Washington; a brother, Harold Massie of Washington; grandchildren, Michelle Martin, Marc Massie, Krissy Ryan, Sara Massie, Dane Ryan, Micah Ryan, and Heather Faith; step-grandchildren, Rick Terrel, Brittany Chestnut, and Alisha Showalter; and several great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Blanche (Milton) Massie, whom he married December 9, 1938, on September 9, 2003. A sister, Mildred Shellhouse and four brothers, Bernard, William, Fred, and Chester Massie are also deceased. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Gordon Mann as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ed Lee Mortuary with a wake service at 4 p.m. and a K of C rosary at 6 p.m. Memorial contribution may be made to the Washington Catholic Education Endowment or the Catholic Community of Washington.
